The goal of this challenge was to teach contestants facts about emergency preparedness through a fun series of quick questions developed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Division. The dunk tank was a metaphor for what happens when you don’t know the facts and when you aren’t prepared – you get wet and cold and are made even more vulnerable. Think you're prepared? Episode Three - Cooking Outside The Box

With this challenge, we hoped to demonstrate to contestants that in an emergency you may not be prepared with the proper nutrition. We hoped to teach contestants about the consequences of not being prepared. Maintaining an emergency preparedness kit at home is one of the best ways to prepare for yourself and your family should a sudden emergency strike. Emergency preparedness kits should contain the basic essentials for living, including food, water, medical supplies (including prescriptions), batteries, flashlights, communication devices (such as a cell phone or charger and/or radio), garbage bags, warm blankets, copies of important personal documents and paper products.

This challenge aimed to teach contestants about how to prepare an emergency preparedness kit ahead of time because in an emergency situation there may not be much time to compile everything one would need to survive for three days. Maintaining an emergency preparedness kit with essential survival items such as food, water, medicine and clothing is the best way for Colorado residents to be prepared. Special guest Denver Nuggets’ Coach Karl visited the contestants in the morning with a special non-toxic “glo germ” on his hands. The challenge aimed to teach contestants about how silently, quickly and undetected a germ can spread. By the time you know that you have the flu you probably have exposed many people to the virus (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) The prevention of influenza has an impact on you and the people that you come into contact with. You can help stop the spread of germs by following these guidelines: Wash your hands/Cover your cough/Stay at home when you are sick/Clean surfaces.

The What If? Video auditions of Colorado residents over the age of 18 were submitted during the month of August for consideration in the What If? Colorado reality competition, then a group of judges from the CDPHE selected 31 semi-finalists in early September. The semi-finalists’ video submissions were then featured on the What If? Colorado Web site (www.WhatIfColorado.com) and from Sept. 7 – 12, Coloradoans were encouraged to vote online and by e-mail for their favorite contestants. Eight regions of the state were represented by the semi-finalists. The contestant with the highest number of votes in each region was chosen as a finalist, in addition to the contestant with the highest overall votes, regardless of the region where they live.

Through a generous donation from HealthONE, each of the nine finalists will receive an Apple 30 gigabyte iPod and the overall winner of the competition will receive a cash grand prize of $2,500.
